Toy Safety at Joy Gift London
At Joy Gift London, safety is at the heart of everything we create. Our handmade crochet toys are carefully designed, responsibly produced and independently tested to meet recognised toy safety standards.
All of our crochet toys have successfully passed the EN 71 toy safety standard, including EN 71-1, EN 71-2 and EN 71-3. These standards are required for toys sold in the United Kingdom and the European Union and help ensure toys are safe for children during normal use. Testing was carried out by an independent accredited laboratory, confirming that our products meet strict safety requirements.
What EN 71 testing means
The EN 71 standard evaluates several important safety aspects of toys:
EN 71-1 · Mechanical & physical safety
Examines construction and durability, including seams, joins and small parts, as well as sharp edges or points that could cause harm during play.
EN 71-2 · Flammability
Evaluates how materials react when exposed to flame, including whether textile toys ignite easily or allow flames to spread quickly.
EN 71-3 · Chemical safety
Checks that materials, including yarns and dyes, do not contain harmful levels of specified chemicals or heavy metals. Our toys use OEKO-TEX® certified cotton yarn as additional reassurance for sensitive skin.
CE & UKCA compliance
Our toys are tested according to EN 71 standards and comply with the EU Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC) and the UK Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011. Based on these safety tests and compliance requirements, our products can carry CE and UKCA markings, confirming they meet the relevant regulations for toys sold in the UK and Europe.
Age suitability
Many of our dolls and toys can be made with embroidered sleeping (closed) eyes, suitable for babies from birth (0+ months). Some designs may include open eyes or hard eye components; in these cases, the toy is recommended for children aged 3 years and above.
Age guidance is clearly stated on each product page and on product tags where applicable. Always follow the guidance provided for the individual design.
